VOLUNTEERS

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

NYFC benefits from the generous contributions from people in the community who have a few extra hours a month or week to give to the agency. All of our volunteers go through an interview, orientation, and criminal background check. We strive to find just the right placement to use a volunteer's talents and interests in the best way possible. Volunteers assist the agency by providing the following services:

Evening Receptionists
Daytime Office Assistance
Victim Advocates
Counseling Interns/Practicum Students
Community Service Supervisors

Currently, our Community Service Program has the greatest need for volunteers.
Perhaps one of the most valuable components of our Juvenile First Offender Program is the Community Service required. Adolescents provide lawn care for some of Richardson's elderly and disabled residents. Juvenile participants enter this program due to minor brushes with the law, such as breaking curfew, shoplifting or getting into a fight at school. The program does not include juveniles cited for felony offenses. NYFC needs more volunteers not only to help us continue these services but also to strengthen and possibly expand the program.

Volunteer Bob Wallace has led our Community Service program for 8 years. Mr. Wallace's service earned him an HASR's Volunteer of the Year Award. Mr. Wallace made the Community Service "greener" when he implemented push mowers. In addition to being more environmentally friendly, the recipients of our community service (and their surrounding neighbors) appreciate the lack of noise and the absence of the smell of gasoline. Mr. Wallace reports that the kids involved in this program respond well to the structure it provides. He doesn't view the program as a punitive measure, and he treats the kids as any others: with respect, while maintaining strong boundaries tempered by a reasonable level of compassion. As a volunteer in this program, you'll have the opportunity to make a positive impact on a young person and help residents in our community while doing so.
